Set on a small monastic raft floating upon a lake, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring depicts the life of a man against the flow of the four seasons. The movie has an aesthetic style that proves imaginary with mystic Oriental images, as well as symbolically interpreting the meditative Asian philosophy. Hamburg City Hall in Germany endowed 1 billion won for the production of the movie.

Director Kim Ki-duk is well known for making low-budget, artistic movies within a relatively short period. His reputation started to become known when his movies, The Isle (2000) and Address Unknown (2001) were entered in the Venice Film Festival. In 2004, he won the Best Director Award for Samaria at the Berlin Film Festival, the Best Director Award for Binjip at the Venice Film Festival, and the Grand Prize for Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring at the Pacific Meridian International Film Festival in Russia. Kim Ki-duk played the role of a middle-aged monk, the main character in the winter part of the movie, showcasing his acting talents.

When released in Korea at the end of 2003, it drew only a mediocre audience of 100,000. However, its box-office earnings from worldwide release as of the end of 2004 surpassed 7 million dollars. The movie was released in countries in the Americas and Europe, and was particularly popular in the U.S., Germany, Italy, Argentina, and Switzerland. Its audience appeal was primarily spread by word of mouth, leading to long runs in many countries. This is very rare for a low-budget artistic film.

[ “Jusanji” - Filming Site of Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring ]
Jusanji is a small reservoir located in Mt. Juwangsan National Park in Cheongsong- gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. Its 30 or so willow trees submerged in the water and the mystic ambience created by the wet-fog make it a favorite spot for photographers. For the production of Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring, a small hermitage was built for 350 million won at the center of Jusanji, and the movie was filmed in a year. After filming, the hermitage was dismantled in respect for the environment. The photo above shows Jusanji in wintertime, but the lake is most beautiful in spring and autumn.
